What does this mean?

I can't understand poetry.

I can read the words, and know what the individual words mean, but the whole doesn't decode in my brain. I guess it's like being tone deaf but for structures of words.

It's probably why I don't like poetry that much and when I listen to songs I just listen the 'sound' and not the meaning words.

Non-fiction has the same kind of effect which is rather worrying as I'm told that the real world is full of this and to opperate as an adult you need to understand it. At the moment I'm trying to fill in my student loan forms, I can do the basics like 'What is your name?' just about, after that I scratched my little head and waited for a grown up to come along. When one eventually did I was expecting to be there for a couple of hours, we were done in under half an hour.

Another problem is any text written before about 1985 which brings me to my request for translation in the title. What does this verse (?) from the King James bible mean?

Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God (Matthew 4:7)

Again, the words themselves I'm fine with, but I think my brain is missing the decypher (appologies if that is the wrong word, Wikipedia isn't loading at the moment).
